The Krum
We went to Cesky Krumlov to go canoeing this weekend. This is the third time we've made this trip; it's become sort of an official/unofficial ESI event. For those of you that don't know, Krumlov is a wonderful little medieval town in southern Czech Republic.
The town looks much as it did 400 years ago. It wasn't destroyed in wars, and it hasn't been over modernized. There's a big castle perched on a rock outcropping that overlooks the town and a little river that snakes its way through it all. Krumlov is beautiful and has a wonderful relaxed atmosphere.
But each year that we've gone, it has felt more and more tourist-ified.
The town is still beautiful, but now many of the streets are lined with cafés, Bohemian crystal shops, and pensions. Several years ago, I remember having a hard time finding places to stay, now it's hard to throw a stick without hitting a hostel. Some of the narrow, crooked streets and alleys are hard to get through for the crowds of Japanese and German tourists.
While I'm happy that others also find this place as wonderful as I do, I think I'm not all that happy to share it. I liked it better when it was quiet and undiscovered.
So my word to you is that you need to go soon. It's not too late. Go before it gets as overrun as Prague.
